You sprayed it at 7am. By the time you sat down at your desk, it was gone.
So you bought a stronger one. Then a more expensive one. Same result.
Here is what nobody tells you: it is probably not the perfume. It is what the perfume is sitting on.
This guide covers why fragrance fades, nine things that make perfume last longer, and the one layer most people have never heard of.
Why does perfume fade?
Perfume fades because its lightest ingredients evaporate first. Fresh top notes like citrus lift off the skin within the first half hour. Heavier base notes like woods, musk and amber stay for hours. How fast that happens depends on your skin, the weather, the strength of the fragrance and how you put it on.
6 reasons your perfume doesn't last
- Your skin is dry. Fragrance clings to moisture and oil. On dry skin there is less for it to hold on to, so it lifts off sooner.
- It is a light scent. Citrus, fresh and aquatic perfumes are built from fast-fading notes. That is how they are made, not a sign of poor quality.
- It is a lighter concentration. An eau de toilette carries less fragrance oil than an eau de parfum, so it wears off sooner.
- The heat is working against you. Warm skin and hot weather speed up evaporation. An Australian summer is hard on any perfume.
- You are putting it on the wrong way. One spray on one wrist, rubbed in, is the fastest way to lose a scent.
- You have gone nose-blind. Your nose stops noticing a smell it lives with. Often the perfume is still there and everyone else can smell it.
How to make perfume last longer: 9 things that work
- Moisturise first. Use an unscented lotion so it doesn't compete with your fragrance.
- Apply to pulse points. The neck, wrists, inner elbows and behind the knees are warm spots that help a scent travel.
- Don't rub your wrists together. Spray and leave it. Rubbing rushes the opening notes.
- Spread it out. One spray on each of three spots gives a better trail than three sprays on one.
- Add fabric. A light spray on a scarf or collar holds scent far longer than skin. Test delicate fabrics first.
- Use a hair mist for your hair. Hair carries scent well, but regular perfume isn't made for it. A hair mist is.
- Layer the same scent. A roll-on perfume oil under your spray gives it a longer-lasting base, and it fits in a pocket for a top-up later.
- Store it properly. Heat and sunlight break perfume down. Keep bottles in a cool, dark cupboard, not the bathroom or the car.
- Start with a primer. This is the step most people skip, and it is the one made for the job.
The layer most people skip: perfume primer
What is a perfume primer?
A perfume primer is a fragrance base you apply before your perfume. Each LeScent perfume primer is built around a single aroma molecule, the kind of long-lasting material perfumers use in the base of modern fragrances. On its own a primer smells soft and sheer, like clean skin. Under a perfume it adds a lasting base layer, so there is still something there once the top notes have gone.
Our primers are made in Sydney in limited batches. They are vegan and cruelty-free.
How to use a perfume primer
- Apply 2 to 4 sprays to your pulse points, such as the neck and wrists.
- Give it a few seconds to dry.
- Spray your perfume on top.
You can also wear a primer on its own as a quiet skin scent.
What a primer will and won't do
The honest version: a primer will not turn a light citrus cologne into a scent that lasts until midnight. What it does is give the dry down more body and help it hold on to your skin. How much difference you notice depends on your skin and the perfume you wear on top.
Which perfume primer is right for you?
| Primer | Smells like | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Iso E Super | Sheer woods, soft musk, airy warmth | You want a smooth, second-skin finish and you like quiet, minimalist scents |
| Ambroxan | Warm, deep and full | You want more warmth, depth and presence |
| Iso G Super | Drier, bolder woods | You want the strongest, most projecting option |
A simple place to start: pair Iso E Super with fresh and citrus perfumes, Ambroxan with sweet, vanilla and amber perfumes, and Iso G Super with woody, oud and leather perfumes.
Why can't I smell my primer?
These molecules are subtle, and many people go nose-blind to them within minutes. That is normal. Even when a primer feels faint to you, it is still adding warmth and a scent trail that other people notice.
Perfume longevity FAQs
Why doesn't perfume last on me?
The usual causes are dry skin, a light or fresh scent, hot weather, or nose-blindness. Moisturise first, apply to pulse points and add a base layer such as a primer or perfume oil.
How long should perfume last?
It depends on the concentration and the notes. A fresh eau de toilette may last a few hours. A richer eau de parfum can last most of the day.
Where should I spray perfume to make it last longest?
Spray warm pulse points like the neck, wrists and inner elbows, then add a light spray on fabric such as a scarf or collar.
Does perfume last longer on clothes or skin?
Usually longer on clothes, because fabric holds scent. On skin a perfume warms up and develops, so it smells fuller. Use both, and test delicate fabrics first.
Does Vaseline make perfume last longer?
It can help a little, for the same reason moisturiser does: it gives the fragrance something to hold on to. A primer is the cleaner version of the same idea, with no greasy feel.
Does a perfume primer change the smell of my perfume?
It adds a soft woody or warm base underneath. It is made to support the scent you already love, not cover it.
Can I wear a perfume primer on its own?
Yes. Many people wear a primer alone as a clean, subtle skin scent.
Does perfume expire?
Yes. Heat, light and air break it down over time. Stored cool and dark, most perfumes last a few years.
